Mir Osman Ali Khan (Nizam of Hyderabad) – Visit & Imperial Endowments at Ajmer

Amir Usman Ali Khan, Nizam of Hyderabad (1912)

In 1912, you visited the Bargah (shrine) of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz in Ajmer. At that time, food was distributed among the poor and needy, and a langar was operated. Large quantities of food and other provisions were distributed among the people.

You also ordered the construction of an imposing gateway, known as the Usmani Gate (Osmani Gate).

You visited the shrine again on 13 November 1913. On this occasion, you made arrangements for the construction of a gateway on the inner side of the shrine complex, near the congregational mosque. A magnificent marble chhatri (canopied pavilion) was constructed there. Both pillars were adorned with inscriptions in Persian calligraphy, including the following couplet:

“May this blessed place remain prosperous and flourishing;

May it remain a shelter for those who seek refuge.”

The passage further states that a lamp was lit inside the shrine and that it continued to shine day and night. A deg (large ceremonial cooking vessel) was also presented as an offering on the occasion of the Urs.

The expenses of the Dar-ul-Uloom Usmania (religious educational institution) were also paid by you. The institution provided free education to its students, and arrangements were made for their accommodation and other necessities.

Nizam Haiderabad had a particular interest in the Dargah of Khwaja Sahib. He commissioned the construction of a gateway known as the Nizam Gate.

The gateway was constructed in 1912. It is approximately 70 feet high, and the passage mentions a daily ceremonial practice associated with it.

The text also refers to the construction of an important structure within the Dargah Sharif complex. It states that Nawab Bashiruddin Sahib arranged for its construction in 1918. The structure is associated with gatherings during the Urs, when qawwali performances take place.
