Sahan-e-Chirag (Akbari Chiragdan) – The Sacred Evening Light of Ajmer Dargah

Sahan-e-Chirag or Akbari chiragdan
After passing through the Buland Darwaza, one enters a spacious courtyard where a beautiful octagonal, dome-shaped canopy (chhatri) stands. Beneath it is a lamp stand (chiragdan) containing numerous lamps, and therefore this place is known as Sahan-e-Chiragh (the Courtyard of Lamps).
It is popularly believed that this lamp was presented by Emperor Akbar. It is also said that approximately 150 kilograms of oil were required to keep the lamp burning continuously for 24 hours. The light from the numerous lamps illuminated the entire courtyard, making it shine brilliantly like gold. It is said that this radiant appearance is also associated with the name (सोन चिराग) Golden Lamp
