The Traditional Langar of Huzoor Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.)

Since the blessed era of Huzoor Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.), the traditional Langar at Dargah Sharif has been prepared using Jowar ka Daliya (sorghum porridge). For centuries, this sacred Langar has been prepared twice daily, throughout all 365 days of the year—after Namaz-e-Fajr and after Namaz-e-Asr—continuing an age-old tradition of devotion, generosity, and selfless service.

It is said that even kings and emperors have stood in line to receive this blessed Langar. It holds immense spiritual significance, and Zaireen, faqirs, and devotees partake of it as a source of spiritual nourishment and blessings. People from every community and faith—including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and others—visit the Darbar of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) and partake of this Langar with devotion and happiness. It is the principal traditional Langar of the Darbar and is entirely vegetarian, prepared in either a sweet or savoury form.

According to family tradition, the responsibility for maintaining this Langar was entrusted by Huzoor Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (R.A.) to His special Khadim, Hazrat Khwaja Fakhruddin Gurdezi (R.A.). This sacred tradition has continued for approximately 800 years, serving devotees and visitors without interruption throughout the year.

Historical accounts and family records state that Mughal emperors endowed Jagirs-e-Waqf (endowed land and revenue grants) to support this Langar. The Nizam of Hyderabad also allocated a special offering for this Langar through his Trust. According to this tradition, the offering continues to be received annually from the Nizam’s Trust for the traditional Langar during the Urs-e-Sharif.
This Langar is also known as Langar-e-Akbari, and its history is recorded in historical books.

Devotees and well-wishers may contribute towards this centuries-old tradition of service, with contributions ranging from ₹11,000 to ₹51,000, helping sustain the blessed Langar and preserve this treasured legacy of Khidmat at Dargah Sharif, Ajmer.
